    The Evolving Nest with Lisa Speers

    So relatable! By Esther, the Dolly MamaI am an expert at adding things to my plate. And then adding plates.

    "Yes! I can do that!"
    "Sure! Why not?"
    "I would love to!"

    These phrases fly out of my mouth before my body has a chance to chime in.

    But very quickly, it's gotten to the point where all the plate spinning is downright unsustainable.

    Beautiful garden property? Yes.
    Book groups? Yes.
    Three email newsletters a week? Yes.
    Podcast? Yes.
    Walk every afternoon? Yes.
    Keeping food in the house? Yes.
    Pickleball with a friend? Yes.
    Being an engaged mom and wife? Yes.
    Becoming a spiritual director? Yes.
    Hosting "not-a-church-but-kind-of" once a month? Yes.

    That body that didn't have a chance to chime in from the get-go?
    She chimed in most definitely this week.

    And it wasn't how I thought she would.

    I thought she'd sideline me with the flu or a headache.
    I thought she might get tingly per usual (especially between my third and fourth toes).
    I thought she would come barreling in with anxiety dreams.

    But no, she didn't do all that.

    She whispered.

    She whispered in the flowers that adorn my yard, who remind me they only bloom for a short time, providing the nourishment only they can, but then they retreat and rest.

    She whispered in the evergreen outside my window that stands tall all year long, but stays right where it is, and does only the job it can do, not the one of the azalea next to it.

    She whispered in the soothing burble of a waterfall, calling me to bask in its healing beauty and not rush to my to-do list.

    Nature has a way of speaking to us when no one else can.

    It speaks NOT with blame or shame or anxiety, but with the unforced rhythms of freedom and grace and peace.

    It sustains us, by very definition, "strengthening and supporting us both physically and mentally," never draining us dry.

    It soothes our souls, bodies and minds with its gentle calm, especially when we are hurried or even in pain.

    I'm not sure which of my very full plates needs to be scraped off, loaded into the dishwasher and then put back in the cabinet. That's something I will have to unpack.

    But I am sure which one it's NOT going to be.

    In fact, I'm heading for a walk right now.

𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝘂𝘆... It’s 3:52 am—too early to be anywhere but snuggled in a warm bed—let alone a frigid airport. So after passing through security, I beelined it to the cafe, where I found bleary-eyed travelers already seated around the cafe’s tables, forming a makeshift line to the counter. Then, from out of nowhere, THIS GUY appears, completely oblivious to the line that's already formed, and plunks himself and his bags right in front of the closed gate. Clearly, we are all waiting for the same jolt of caffeine. I can tell I'm not the only one who's perturbed by this guy's lack of awareness. I share a knowing glance with my fellow travelers, silently commiserating with each other over this guy's sheer audacity. But maybe, just maybe, he'll realize his mistake before the gate opens and apologize, right? Oh, no! As the gate rises, THIS GUY picks up his bags and walks briskly to the counter, where he proceeds to bash the barista for the breakfast sandwiches having not been delivered. It’s 4:01 in the morning! Sure, we could have said something to him, but I don't think any of us had the energy to engage with someone so completely unaware. With all the heartache going on in the world, there are better places to use our voices, and his pettiness wasn’t worth the effort. Just when I was starting to lose faith in humanity, a young man and I inadvertently find ourselves vying for the same spot in line to board the plane. Instantly he smiled and gestured for me to go ahead. “Thank you!” Thank you to the 30’ish-year-old man on his way to Denver whose mama would be so proud. It's moments like these that remind us how much a little bit of decency and compassion can go a long way. It doesn't take much to make someone's day, whether it's a smile, a greeting, or just making eye contact. Goodness, we all should be more aware of our surroundings for our own safety, if not for the courtesy of others.
